Q65 was founded in The Hague, Netherlands in 1965. In the early years, they played beat and garage rock in the style of the Pretty Things as well as rhythm & blues, inspired by bands such as The Kinks, Animals and the Rolling Stones. After 2 LPs and numerous singles in the 1960s, they became one of the most popular bands of the Dutch rock wave (Nederbeat).
At the beginning of the new decade, however, there were internal crises that led to several personnel changes in the band. For their third album Afghanistan, after several years with Decca, they signed a contract with the Dutch record label Negram. For the album, released in October 1970, they changed their style to hard psychedelic blues rock in line with the zeitgeist of the time. The German pressing released shortly afterwards contains songs from their next and last album We're Gonna Make It on the B-side instead of the live rock ‘n roll medley of the Dutch version.
Despite their success at home, the band remained largely unnoticed and unsuccessful outside the Netherlands. However, their Afghanistan LP with powerful, bluesy proto-hard rock with psychedelic echoes is now a sought-after and expensive collector's item worldwide.
