Mammut was the melange of two German Jazz bands from the Stuttgart jazz scene The Rope Set and Those with the two Schnur brothers (g, voc), Rainer Hoffmann (p, org), Tilo Hermann (b, fl) and Günter Saier (dr). But this new band basically only existed for the two to three weeks in the studio, for the realisation of the album. They recorded eight progressive krautrock numbers in a freak-out psych and hard rock weirdness.
It was released in 1971 on the unknown local Mouse Trick Track label, founded by MPS from Villingen-Schwenningen especially for more rock-oriented releases, and quickly became a legendary rarity. Not least because of the particularly good production, the LP is considered a masterpiece and milestone of progressive rock music of the early seventies in Germany.
