Second album by the Keith Tippett Group from 1971, heavily influenced by the band Soft Machine, from whose LP Volume Two not only a composition provided the album title, but also five band members took part in the recording sessions for this „Canterbury LP“. Namely: Marc Charig (cornet), Nick Evans (tb), Elton Dean (alto/sax), who were part of the core line-up of the Keith Tippett Group, as well as Roy Babbington (b) and Robert Wyatt (dr). In addition to Keith Tippett (p/el-p), the other musicians were Gary Boyle (g), Neville Whitehead (b), Bryan Spring, Phil Howard (dr) and Tony Uta (conga/cow-bell). Released on the legendary Vertigo label with a wonderful cover design by Roger and Martyn Dean, it is one of the most jazz-oriented albums on the label. As commercial success failed to materialise, the band split up again and turned their attention to new musical projects.
The best British jazz and rock musicians from Canterbury at the time merged avant-garde and free jazz with prog rock to create a fascinating and creative synthesis that is still unparalleled today. That's why UK originals of this album are still highly sought-after and expensive these days.
