Freeway was an obscure and never mentioned South African group with bassist Sipho Gumede as the bandleader. Together with Enoch Mthalane (g), Jabu Nkosi (p, keyb) and some other unnamed but well-known greats of South African jazz music, he formed this band project. They recorded their debut album Abahambi „Balomhlaba“ for the South African label Flame in Johannesburg in 1975. All the musicians were masters of their instruments. On this masterpiece of afro-soul jazz and jazz funk, they played both collectively and in creative solo passages in which they were able to fully display their skills.
Nevertheless, this album was not a success and remains a lost and virtually non-existent album to this day. The extremely rare few copies that were released have completely disappeared into collections.
