Culpeper's Orchard, named after the English botanist, psychologist and astrologer Nicholas Culpeper (1616 - 1654), was a Danish progressive band from Copenhagen, formed in 1970. Led by Englishman Cy Nicklin (voc, g, perc) with Rodger Barker (dr, perc), also from England, and two Danes Niels Henriksen (g, p, voc, hpd) and Michael Friis (b, org, fl, p, perc), they recorded their eponymous debut album in 1971, which was released by Polydor Records in the same year. The cover, a magnificent work of art, is just as colourful as their music. It shows a style of heavy psych-prog influenced by a mixture of West Coast folk-rock and prog sounds of the late 60s. Although it was published in five countries worldwide, it received no international response at all.
The record is one of the rarest Danish prog LPs and, in the opinion of various music connoisseurs, also musically one of the best creations from the small country in northern Europe. And expensive, even as a German high-quality Polydor pressing.
