Comus formed in England in the late 60s, taking their name from both a Greek God and respective John Milton piece from the 17th century. The band received an early boost from David Bowie, who picked the band to open for the singer back in 1969. Two years later this ground breaking debut album First Utterance appeared. It featured a line-up of Roger Wootton (g, voc), who also wrote most of the material, Colin Pearson (vi, viola), Rob Young (fl, oboe), Andy Hellaby (b), Bobby Watson (perc) and Glen Goring (g). The latter also painted the inside, while Roger Wootton, the band's singer and songwriter, drew the ballpoint pen illustration of the cover. This influential album is an unique blend of progressive rock, folk, psychedelia, melt together with horrific lyrics: witchcraft, murder, rape!
Until these days these exciting and stand-alone piece of music stands as a rock in a maelstrom of average music produced since then. Regarded by many as a masterpiece, UK originals on Dawn, a small English progressive rock and folk rock label, are extremely sought after today.
