The group Between, which lasted for almost 10 years, was constantly made up of new musicians from various countries. However, three musicians formed the core of the band: Peter Michael Hamel (keyb, voc), guest musician on the LP Malesch by Agitation Free, the Argentinian and instrument maker Roberto C. Détrée (g, vlc, harp) and Robert Eliscu (ob) from the USA, who played oboe with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and also with Popol Vuh. They were joined by the American Cotch Black (perc). With the support of Duru Omson (bamboo fl, perc, voc) from the USA and Fabian Arkas (Walter Bachauer, elec) from Austria, they recorded their second album in 1973. And The Waters Opened was released the same year on the iconic Vertigo label in Germany.
Between's chamber music moved between the realms of Eastern and Western music, performed on electronic and traditional acoustic instruments. At the time, it created a novel combination of classical, avant-garde, rock music, medieval and oriental music as well as international folklore. The intensive exploration of the musical past of each individual musician resulted in pieces of extremely different character. With their endeavour to combine different musical styles into a „world music“ or „new age music“, they were far ahead of their time. Today, this second LP by the band on Vertigo is a classic and a masterpiece of the avant-garde of the early German 1970s.
