Baba Yaga was a project by Ingo Werner, a former member of the hard rock and psychedelic Krautrock band My Solid Ground from the Rhine-Main area. Together with Bernd Weidmann (voc, b), who also contributed the lyrics, Winfried Schreiber (g), Jürgen Dyrauf (g), Joska Fiedermutz (dr, perc), he released his first album in 1974 in a very limited edition on the small German label Cycle. He played electric piano, piano, mellotron, synthesiser, organ, clavinet, bassoon and gong, composed all the tracks and was also the producer in Dieter Dierks studio.
At the time, the music was compared to several British prog rock bands such as Cressida, Aardvark, Egg or Arzachel. Echoes of the Canterbury scene can also be heard through jazzy influences. His creative use of synthesizers also resulted in some heavy psychedelic sounds and cosmic avant-garde sound colours. Despite its commercial failure, the album quickly became a sought-after rarity.
